will be hosted by Penn State University. The dates are May 5 & 7, 2011.
Check this page for more information as it becomes available.
State College
Invitational High School Tournament ..... State College is
currently working with PSU and AVCA to host our invitational offsite at PSU
IM building. We are in the early planning stages, but we will be sending out
priority invitations in early fall and the tournament may include sanctioned
varsity teams from neighboring states. The tournament will be a one-day
event on the FRIDAY BEFORE NCAA FINALS (May 6th 2011) counting for 2 PIAA
competition points. Participation will be limited based on the number of
courts available. Entry fees, format and other participation details will be
forthcoming. If you are interested in receiving an invitation please email:
kmk13@scasd.org
It is imperative that you contact your
Athletic Director FIRST to verify that your school district will allow your
team to
participate in an all-day event on a school day. Teams considering attending
the Semi-Final or Final NCAA men's matches and requiring hotel
accommodations may want to make reservations EARLY.

AVCA Talent Showcase ..... The AVCA
will host a Talent Showcase, or recruiting combine, on Saturday morning for
boys interested in further demonstrating their skills for college coaches.
State College High School Invitational is a separate event! The event will
include physical testing and skill- specific drills allowing college coaches
to assess both the potential and current skill level of participants.
Education on the recruiting process, rules and eligibility will be offered
to parents. Registration for the Talent Showcase will be on a first-come,
first-served basis and the cost of
that event will be separate from the cost of the tournament.

GPVCA
"Sets" The Bar High .....
The Greater Philadelphia Volleyball
Coaches Association recently offered a setting clinic with Brian Begor, the
head clinician (more details). While many great
clinicians from within and outside Pennsylvania often share their knowledge
with our athletes, there was a twist.
Instead of using the money for their needs, the GPVCA donated their proceeds
to the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation. It is to be used to fund the
volleyball needs of Marial Bai, a girls school in The Sudan, Africa. "This
money is for the expressed purpose of
purchasing volleyball equipment so that the young women may have the benefit
of athletic activity and especially volleyball". Read more about this
exciting and creative way of promoting the sport of volleyball .....

Notes from the PIAA
Championships .....
We've all heard that famous
Yogi Berra quote, "It ain't over 'til it's over." This certainly rang true
on the first day of the state championships. Two tie-breakers, one in each
classification, would provide an exciting ending to pool play. Northeastern
and Ambridge in AA, Pennsbury and North Allegheny in AAA, all punched their
tickets into the semi-finals with 3-0 records on Friday. State College and
Eastern fought their way into Saturday with 2-1 records. But six other teams
battled for the final outcome of go home or come back Saturday. When the
dust settled, Pennridge (AAA) and Meadville (AA) came out the winners.
The semi-finals matched up
some familiar opponents. In AAA, Pennsbury and Pennridge were a repeat of
the District 1 Championships. In AA, Northeastern and Eastern were a rematch
of the District 3 Championships.
The finals showcased
State College winning their first championship, while Northeastern won
their third (1992 & 1993). Both teams had strong support with Northeastern a
somewhat short ride to
Happy Valley. And well,
State College, the fans kept streaming in following their semi-final win.
Some history
.. Since
1972, there has only been one year (1998) when at least one District 3 or 7
team was not in the AAA or overall state finals
.. Only three districts
have been represented in the short history of the AA championships (3,7,10).
The PVCA's own and
Parkland girls coach, Mike Krause, continues to supply the outstanding
commentary for the PCN broadcasts of the championship finals. Thanks also to
PCN and announcer Gary Sutton ..... In addition, 2010 marked the first time
there was a "play by play" announcer for the event. Thanks to Dan Smith
(women's coach at Penn State Beaver) for filling this new and exciting
change to the state championships

Sponsors for PVCA Newsletter .....
Being old as dirt, I remember black and white television and the eventual
change to color (I think our household was one of the last to get a new
color TV when I was a kid). Now I can also remember when the 2008 PVCA fall
newsletter was our first to contain color. This change was a results of our
association with our first partner ..... Sports Imports. Please keep them in
mind for your volleyball needs.
Sports
Imports .....

When it comes to indoor volleyball equipment, you can't
beat Sports Imports. At the school I teach and coach, we have been using
Senoh equipment for thirty years (we also use their badminton standards and
nets). We still have the first pair of standards we purchased at Red Lion.
We are in the process of building a new field house. Sports Imports will not
only be our equipment of choice, but they have been invaluable in the
planning of our new facility.
Check out their web site (click
here). Also don't miss their "Drill & Tips"" page (click
here), a must for every volleyball coach.
Contact Neil Gilbert who is the sales representative for
Pennsylvania ..... email
ngilbert@sportsimports.com ..... phone 800-556-3198. Neil will also be
at our PVCA clinic at Penn State if you need to talk with him..
